Babys Trading Cards

Babys trading cards appeared around 1979-80. They were packaged along with cards for the bands Queen, KISS, and The Village People. (How's that for variety?!) Twelve Babys cards made a set. On the back of most cards was a puzzle piece. Putting the pieces together would make a picture of one of the four bands. Some of the cards, though, had the musician's bio on the back. I've included the Babys' bios below. These are pretty cheesy, especially the one for gourmet egg salad-eating he-man Jonathan Cain. I've reproduced the bios exactly as they appear on the card, bad grammar, incorrect capitalization and punctuation included.

JOHN WAITE (left)
John Waite is the lead singer for the group. John was born in Lancaster, England on the fourth of July.

Ping Pong, as he is sometimes called, is the adventurous type. He loves to explore uncharted Islands and from time to time tries to capture their beauty in a painting.

He is also a people watcher, especially those with sad eyes and interesting faces. John is somewhat of a loner. He likes out-of-the-way places.

JONATHAN CAIN

Twenty-seven year old. Jonathan Cain was born February 26. 1952. in Chicago. Illinois. J.C. as he is sometimes called plays all keyboard instruments for the group. Most of his musical influence comes from Jimmy Smith.

Pisces men are always hungry. To satisfy his rugged. he-man appetite he makes gourmet egg salad. J.C. is a master chef. he also loves to prepare Polynesian gourmet dishes.

J.C. hops around the city in his flashy firebird.

(Editor's note: Geeze, not only is Jonathan's bio unintentionally hillarious, they sure picked unflattering pictures of him, too, didn't they?)

TONY BROCK

Born under the sign of the Ram. the strongest sign of the Zodiac. Tony shows his strength in his playing of the drums. He has many interests: photography. tropical fish. Chinese food and cooking. He says his favorite is good Delicatessin type food.

Mr. T as his is called by his friends cruises around town in a sporty Trans-Am.

WALLY STOCKER

Wally Stocker, nicknamed Wally Gator, was born on March 27, 1954 in New Cross, England. Wally has a wide range of interest. He has an extensive record collection. Also collects antique exhaust pipes...as strange as it sounds. It seems strange also that a sensitive musician like Wally would be into stock car racing, but he loves it.

He has tremendous musical talent and was influnenced mostly by Paul Kosoff and the group "Free."

His diet is kept rather simple but he has a real fondness for strawberries and peanuts.

He claims a teddy bear as a pet.

RICKY PHILLIPS

Ricky Phillips plays the bass guitar for the Babys. His work is closely related to his hobby as he restores musical instruments. His artistic ability is reflected in his interest in other things such as arts and crafts. He loves to collect jewelry.

Ricky was born in Mount Pleasant. Iowa on October 7, 1955. His musical interest has been mostly influenced by Stanley Clarke and Laz Barrera.

He is a reptile lover and has a Cobra for a pet.
