Temple Bar (the bar)

Elizabeth outside of Temple Bar

When my cyberpal Margaret and I were in New York City for the When You Were Mine premier party, we made time for a trip down to Temple Bar. We had a false start at first, tho. Silly us first got there at 2:30 p.m., thinking that we could walk right it. DUH--it's a BAR, it opens at 5! So, we killed some time in The Village, took a bit more of our bus tour, etc.

When we finally got in, boy, was it dark inside! Very, very dark. It took a while for my eyes to adjust. We sat at the bar and I tried to strike up a conversation with the bartender. And wouldn't you know that we get a guy who is not very chatty? <sigh> The exchange kinda went like this:

Me: So...I hear that you have a famous patron.
Bartender: Yeah? Who?
Me: John Waite
Bartender: Yes.
<silence...didn't this guy realize that the more he talked, the bigger his tip would be???>
Me: Well, it's not often that you find a CD named after a bar. It's one of our favorite CDs.
Bartender: <no response>
Me: So, does John still come in here?
Bartender: Sporadically..not too often.

And that was it. Sheesh! No extra in the tip for him! <g>

Anyone know what kind of fossil this thingy is?

OK, you all have heard about the $7 drinks. Did you also know that there is a one drink minimum in the lounge area? Egads! The place was almost totally empty, and Margaret and I wanted to move from the bar area to sit in the lounge part. (The bar is shaped like a horseshoe...when you first walk in, there's the curved bar...at the top of the "horseshoe" is the entrance to the lounge area.) So, we took our $7 glasses of wine and made out way to the lounge. Well, the cocktail waitress who does the seating there told us that if we moved there, we would have to buy another drink! Turns out the seating area has a one drink minimum separate from what you purchase at the bar. Geez--there was maybe two couples in there--it's not as if the place was full! She could have just let us sit there for a minute, but oh, well. We did not want to buy another round so we headed back to the bar.

When I met John Waite that night, I told him that Margaret and I went to Temple Bar as part of our "Walking tour of John Waite's New York City." And, you know, he was so humble and flattered, as if he didn't think anyone would like him enough to want to do that! Anyways, I told him that the bartender told me that he only comes in sporadically. John's response was something like..."Yeah, I don't go there too much anymore. It used to be a hip place, but now it's gotten pretty Yuppie." LOL!

John is right about it being "pretty Yuppie" now. After all, this is a place that sells souvineer t-shirts! Oh, and they have free postcards and matchbooks and little name cards for the taking. Be sure to stock up on your way out...hey, after paying $7 for a glass of wine, you deserve a free souvineer or two! ;-)
