Robin Little meets John WaiteDetroit, MI
|
We had a FAB time in Detroit! I have to say right off that John looks better than I have ever seen him! Yummm! Hee! We got to Detroit around 5 p.m. and checked into our hotel, got ready and were at the venue at about 6:45. Doors were to be at 6:30, but they still weren't open and there was a line! Don't ask me why there was a line when all seats were reserved, but hey, I was just happy to see all the people wanting to see John!
Anyway, we got in and found out that there were tables at the front of the stage. Actually, my friend Janice's ticket turned out to be better than mine and I got her ticket a week after I bought mine. So we sat at her table which was right in front of the stage and just right of where John would be standing! I turned my chair around and my knees were touching the stage! I was as happy as a little girl! :-)
I went roaming around the lobby to see if I could find Meet and Greet info, but I didn't have any luck. Then fellow online fan Ron saw me and introduced himself! He is really a nice guy, and I really think he was as excited as I was which I didn't think was possible! :-) I met his girlfriend Jamie and saw where their seats were. They were pretty far back and I told him if there was anyway I could get them closer, I would.
We kept going back to the lobby to see if we could see anyone. Finally around 8 I gave up and guessed that the M&G just wasn't going to happen since they weren't even there to sell T-shirts yet! Then Ron came up to me at 8:10 and said that passes were being given out. So, I went up there and got mine.
About 8:45 we were finally taken back to see John. Janice and I had about 10 people in front of us and Ron and Jamie were right behind us. They took us underneath the stage...very strange. But since this was an old theater, they really didn't have a large place to meet. Anyway, it was very hot there and we could only spend a few minutes with John because it was so hot and everyone wanted to get though to see him. I took my WYWM liner notes for him to sign and a promo card from the Vegas show.

I went up to John and he took my hand and kissed me on the cheek and I kissed him back! I said "Hi John, it has been a long time, I haven't seen you since the Bad English days." Quite frankly, I don't think he heard a word I said! He was looking very closely at my face and said in that wonderful, low voice "We have meet before, haven't we?!" So I go "Yes, back with Bad English I saw you several times!" I couldn't believe he remembered me! He said "Yes, I remember your face" and then he threw his head back and goes, "It is all coming back to me now!" :-) |
He asked what shows I had seen and of course my mind went totally blank and I said I saw you several times...I was everywhere! I told him I was from Nashville and that he should play there. He said they are trying to get a gig there, but didn't have a venue. I told him to play the "Bluebird Cafe" and he said they won't let him in there! Hee! All the while, Ron is taking pics of all this!
|
Chris (John's manager) then took a pic of the two
of us together and had Janice come up for a shot of all three of us. I introduced Janice
to John and he goes, "Oh, so you are from Detroit!" And she goes, " No, I
am from Alabama!" And he said "You didn't come all this way just for this did
you?!" I said, "Yes, so no pressure, but make it a good show!" Hee! He
loved that! |

Then while Chris was trying to work Janice's camera, we stood there and Janice goes "Take your time Chris, we don't mind waiting here!" Then I walked away so she could get a pic of just her and John. While John was posing for the pic he kept saying "Robin and Janice, Janice and Robin..." I think he was trying not to forget our names this time! Hahaha! We talked to Chris for a minute, then we had to leave. So I really didn't have much time to talk to him and there is so much I wanted to say! |
The second band was still on stage when we got back to our seats (there were 2 bands before him) and some of their family members were at our table. When the band got off the stage, those people left, so I went and got Ron and Jamie to sit with us.
Oh, I forget to tell you what John was wearing! He had on his black suit with a black shirt, very nice!! I was also in all black due to the fact that I forgot the red jacket I was gonna wear over it that night! Uggh! Turned out just as well though because it was so hot!
John comes out with his glasses on which stay on his face for about 2 seconds! What is it with him and those glasses?!? I thought they looked wonderful on him! He put them in his pocket and went into "Missing You"! I was surprised this was the first number! I got the setlist off the stage after the show. Here is what was on it:
Missing You
When I See You Smile
Act Of Love
Change
When You Were Mine
In Dreams
Isn't It Time
Straight To Your Heart
Imasinary Girl (yes, this is how it is spelled on the list, and no, they
didn't play it!)
Back On My Feet Again (actually this was listed further down the list, but
this is where it was played at the show!)
Downtown
How Did I Get By Without You
Encircled
Midnight Rendezvous
A few highlights for me: "In Dreams" sounded great!! "Isn't It Time"...Ok, I was crying during this! Wow, how overwhelmed I was to finally hear this one live! Words just can't express how lovely this was! And he looked at me and smiled! :-)
Oh, several times during the show (especially when he would goof up a line!) he would look at me and raise his eyebrows like "Oops, I know you caught that!" Hee! I was totally blown away by "Encircled"! Wow!! What a rocker! I do have one complaint, after he did "Back On My Feet Again" and he had everyone on their feet, he did "Downtown" and told everyone to sit!! He should have done "Downtown" first THEN rocked the house!! Just my 2 cents there. Also, "Saturday Night" was on the set list, but he didn't do it...darn!
We went outside after the show hoping to see him again. There were several people back there waiting too. John finally came out and Chris had him in a hurry due to the fact they had to be at the airport at 4:30 a.m.! One girl would NOT stop asking John questions though, so he couldn't get away! I could tell Chris was about to get upset! Anyway, John saw me and I got another hug. Then he got in the van and left with the band.
Hoping to see more shows soon.....
Cheers,
Robin Little
